Watch & Jewellery Tweezers: Building a Distributor Evaluation Set
A professional distributor set should cover distinct workshop tasks rather than combine several visually different tweezers under a generic “precision” label. Movement parts, hands and dials, cases and bracelets, gemstones, soldering and finished surfaces place different demands on geometry, material, tension and contact behavior.
Organize the set by task
- Movement parts: fine straight patterns with clear visibility and controlled closing force.
- Hands and dials: geometry chosen around approved contact zones and surface sensitivity.
- Cases and bracelets: stronger or broader profiles for pins, links and hardware.
- Gemstones: locking or dedicated stone tweezers evaluated for the stone size and setting task.
- Soldering: material and geometry assessed for the actual thermal process.
- Finished surfaces: controlled-contact or replaceable non-metal tips evaluated for marking risk.
Recommended evaluation directions
A useful comparison set may include anti-magnetic-pattern AA, No. 3 and No. 5 tweezers, a solid-titanium fine-point model, a locking stone tweezer and a replaceable controlled-contact tip. The contents should be finalized through sample trials.
Separate solid titanium from coatings
Solid titanium and titanium-coated stainless steel are different constructions. Record the substrate and coating separately. A color or “titanium finish” description does not establish that the entire tool is titanium.
Verify magnetic status
Do not infer magnetic behavior from appearance, country of origin or alloy family. Define the required test, instrument, conditions and acceptance result for the exact model. Untested tools must remain pending.
Measure geometry and force
Record overall length, weight, tip width and thickness, contact length, free opening and closing force at a defined opening. Inspect alignment, crossing, burrs, sharp unintended edges and return action. For locking tools, evaluate engagement, release and play.
Protect delicate surfaces
“Non-marring” should not be used as an unconditional claim. Tip material, surface finish, cleanliness, force, component coating and operator technique all influence marking. Approve the tool only after representative trials on the intended surface or an accepted equivalent.
Approve each tool separately
Assign each item a model code, material identification, task, sample revision and test status. A set-level approval should not conceal an untested individual tool. Keep the approved golden set with its measurement and evaluation record.
Packaging for distributors and academies
Use numbered slots, tip protection, care cards and replacement-tip codes. Packaging should prevent tools from striking each other. Private-label artwork, model names and claims must match the approved specification.
Evaluation-set checklist
- Task assigned to every model
- Substrate and coating recorded separately
- Geometry, weight and closing force measured
- Magnetic status tested when required
- Surface-contact trial documented
- Replacement components identified
- Golden sample and revision approved
- Batch inspection and change control agreed
