PIC Handling Tweezers: Contact Zone Drawing and Test Plan
PIC handling should begin with a drawing that identifies permitted contact zones and a test plan that shows how the tool will be evaluated. A generic “fine-tip tweezer” description cannot define whether the contact geometry is safe or repeatable for a specific photonic integrated circuit package.
Create the component contact-zone drawing
Mark the component substrate, coatings, optical surfaces, fragile edges, permitted contact regions, forbidden areas and approach direction. Include dimensions and tolerances. If a fixture constrains access, show the tool path and working clearance.
Create the matching tweezer drawing
| Feature | Drawing requirement |
|---|---|
| Tip profile | Point, flat, radius, width and thickness |
| Contact surface | Working-zone length and position |
| Alignment | Permitted lateral and vertical offset |
| Opening | Required access range |
| Force | Measurement opening and handle position |
| Surface condition | Finish, defect limits and inspection magnification |
Build the test plan before samples arrive
- Verify drawing and sample identities.
- Inspect tip geometry, alignment and edges.
- Measure force with one stated fixture.
- Use representative components or approved test coupons.
- Record slips, marks, edge contact and operator control.
- Repeat a defined number of handling cycles.
- Apply the relevant cleaning process and reinspect.
- Approve, reject or revise the contact-zone design.
Separate material declarations from performance
Request the tweezer substrate and any coating or insert separately. Do not infer ESD, non-marring, cleanliness, particle performance or chemical compatibility. If these matter, state the test method and limit.
Retain an approved reference
Store the accepted sample with the contact-zone drawing, test report, measurement method and revision. Production orders should cite those references. Require notification of changes to material, tip grinding, polishing, coating, cleaning or manufacturing site.
