Substrate vs Decorative Coating: What OEM Buyers Must Verify
The substrate is the underlying material of a tweezer; a decorative coating is a surface layer used for color or appearance. They are not interchangeable claims. OEM buyers should document both separately so a gold, black, rainbow or rose-gold finish is not mistaken for a solid-material construction.
What to request for the substrate
Ask for the supplier’s declared base material for the exact model and the evidence appropriate to the purchasing risk. Check whether the record applies to raw material, the finished tool or a production lot. Appearance alone cannot identify the alloy or performance.
What to request for the coating
Identify the coating or finish description, color reference, coated areas, edge coverage, cosmetic limits and any agreed process record. If thickness, adhesion or wear matters, define a test method and acceptance criteria rather than relying on a general durability statement.
| Question | Substrate | Decorative coating |
|---|---|---|
| Where is it? | Base material through the tool body | Surface layer or finish |
| What can photos show? | Very little about identity | Color, coverage and visible defects |
| What needs evidence? | Declared grade or composition | Process or coating description |
| What needs testing? | Any claimed functional property | Any claimed adhesion, wear or compatibility |
Inspect the complete tool after finishing
Recheck tip geometry, alignment, closing action, edge condition and branding after coating. Surface buildup or polishing can affect contact behavior. Use a physical reference sample and agreed cosmetic defect images.
Claims that need special caution
Do not infer corrosion resistance, hardness, ESD behavior, magnetic response, cleanroom suitability or chemical compatibility from coating color. Each requires a defined requirement and supporting evidence where relevant.
Require change control
Ask for prior notice before changes to substrate source, heat treatment, coating process, thickness target, color reference, surface preparation, polishing or manufacturing location. Define when a new sample is mandatory.

Request a substrate-and-coating sample comparison
Send the exact model or SKU, required substrate evidence, preferred finish and color, coated areas, logo method, sample quantity, cosmetic limits and any test method you require. Ask all documents to distinguish base material from decorative finish.
